The Guild of Guardians, the highly anticipated crypto-fueled role-playing game (RPG) developed for iOS and Android, is inching closer to its release. Created by crypto company Immutable and game developer Mineloader, the game has recently emerged from a development reboot and is currently undergoing pre-alpha testing. While still in its early stages, Guild of Guardians shows potential as an engaging mobile game that seamlessly integrates non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and crypto tokens.

The game's director, Chris Clay, a seasoned developer with experience in Magic: The Gathering and DC Comics games, explains that the pre-alpha version aims to introduce players to its two core loops: dungeon combat and crafting/forging. This is to attract the huge the number of people (including myself) who prefer mobile games they can enjoy during idle moments or multitasking, without requiring undivided attention.

Guild of Guardians: A Peek into the Pre-Alpha Stage

Guild of Guardians, in its current pre-alpha testing stage, has launched a limited demo called "The Beautiful Corner." A gaming news website had the opportunity to play this guided demo alongside the developers unveiling game's potential. Despite its pre-alpha status, the game exhibits promise as a casual mobile game infused with NFTs and crypto tokens.

Guild of Guardians presents a vibrant and captivating world of visuals. The 3D graphics, though still in development, offer an appealing mix of colorful and sprite-like characters set against a backdrop of dark fantasy. The game sets up a clear clash between good and evil, an element that might resonate with players fond of classic fantasy themes. The audio, epic and cinematic in nature, seems designed to accommodate both players who enjoy immersive sound and those who prefer to play with muted audio.

Dungeon Crawling Strategy

Guild of Guardians introduces players to a dungeon-fighting experience that holds intrigue, especially for competitive players. The game allows the addition of multiple Guardians to the party, enabling strategic positioning during battles. Crafting, forging, and leveling up in dungeons form the core gameplay loop. The game provides broader 2D dungeon maps that offer a sense of geography for battles, enhancing the feeling of progression.

According to Chris Clay, the Game Director of Guild of Guardians, “defeat is a natural part of the game.” That’s where the Roguelite comes in. Roguelite are the games which don’t have much brutality in their design. In roguelite, some of the aspects from their previous games are maintained. In contrast, roguelikes are very challenging games, especially dungeon crawlers, that include uncompromising elements like permanent death (or “permadeath”) when you lose in battle.

No game is worth playing without the fear of defeat or failure but stakes are relatively low in this game. If a Guardian is defeated, players can make another attempt. The game mechanics allow characters to retain their gear and experience points after death. It becomes progressively easier to overcome challenges that were once quite impossible.

Crafting for Casual Players in Guild of Guardians

The crafting and forging loop of the tutorial is said to be quite intuitive and captivating. There is no need of watching the gaming tutorials if you want to play this game. In order to make basic items, yo just have to clear the rooms and win the required materials. That simple.  Unlike many PC RPGs, the game simplifies crafting by displaying “craftable” options based on acquired "recipes."

One standout aspect of Guild of Guardians is the rapid leveling up process. Unlike hardcore PC RPGs and MMORPGs, where leveling can be hard, this game offers a faster progression rate. Playtesting revealed that characters could be powered up to level 20 or higher in less than an hour, providing a smoother leveling experience. Characters can reach a maximum level of 120, except for a few that can reach a maximum level of 140. Moreover, a unique "star up" leveling system adds an extra layer of complexity to the character advancement process.

Positioned as a "companion" mobile game, Guild of Guardians is tailored for casual and somewhat idle play. The game acknowledges that players may not always be able to dedicate extensive time to gaming. Instead, it offers a balance between randomness and strategy, making it a potential favorite among RPG enthusiasts who seek engaging gameplay within short mobile sessions. The promise of NFTs and crypto tokens adds a unique twist, promising exciting experiences for those attracted to blockchain technology.
