Following the recent developments on August 26, where telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested at Paris-Le Bourget Airport, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has requested the French government to provide consular services to Durov. Durov, a multi-national citizen, including that of the UAE, is facing serious allegations. French prosecutors have charged him with 12 offenses, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and dissemination of child exploitation content.

UAE’s Request and France’s Legal Standpoint

The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reacted to Durov's arrest by closely monitoring the situation and requesting the French government to offer all necessary consular services to Durov. The ministry emphasized that caring for citizens, preserving their interests, and providing them with support are its top priorities. In response to the arrest, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated France's commitment to freedom of expression within the boundaries of the law to ensure citizen protection.

"I have seen false information regarding France following the arrest of Pavel Durov. France is deeply committed to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and to the spirit of entrepreneurship. It will remain so. In a state governed by the rule of law…" - Emmanuel Macron

Under French law, Durov’s detention can be extended until August 28, when investigators will decide whether to formally charge or release him.

International Reactions and Potential Implications

Pavel Durov’s arrest has triggered strong responses from various countries, including Russia, where officials have denounced the arrest as politically motivated and reflective of Western double standards on freedom of speech. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov have both voiced criticism, suggesting that the charges against Durov could be an attempt to intimidate the CEO of a major global company.

TRON founder Justin Sun has proposed a “FreePavel DAO” for Durov’s legal defense, pledging a $1 million donation. Sun has also called on X CEO Elon Musk and social media commentator Nawfal to join in supporting the initiative to secure Durov’s freedom. The arrest had an immediate impact on Toncoin, a cryptocurrency associated with telegram, causing it to lose over 20% of its market value. However, the currency has slightly recovered and is currently trading at $5.45.

The next 48 hours are crucial as French authorities determine the future of telegram’s founder, which could have significant implications for both the platform and international relations.
