Mysten Labs, the innovative developer of the Sui blockchain, has unveiled its ambitious plan to release the SuiPlay0X1 handheld gaming device in the first half of 2025. The company has already begun accepting preorders for the device, which comes with a price tag of $599 and promises a groundbreaking gaming experience.

The SuiPlay0X1 is designed to support both traditional PC games and titles built on the Sui blockchain, demonstrating a significant leap in the integration of blockchain technology into the gaming industry. This move paves the way for new possibilities and experiences for gamers worldwide.

SuiPlay0X1 Aims to Provide Seamless Gaming Experience

Adeniyi Abiodun, one of the co-founders of Mysten Labs, emphasized that the key focus of gamers is on gameplay rather than the underlying technology. The SuiPlay0X1 aims to deliver a seamless gaming experience, with blockchain integration enhancing player ownership without compromising on the fun factor.

Abiodun expressed that the device will showcase how blockchain-powered games can deliver a similar look and feel to traditional "Web2" games, offering players a deeper level of engagement and immersion.

The SuiPlay0X1 will have a weight of 677 grams and feature an integrated graphics processing unit to ensure smooth performance. It will run on the Playtron GameOS, a Linux-based operating system capable of handling AAA PC games without any need for modifications.

Several blockchain-based games, including the third-person shooter XOCIETY and the medieval brawler DARKTIMES, are scheduled for release on the device. These titles promise to bring a new level of excitement and interaction to gaming enthusiasts.

Mysten Labs, founded in 2021 by former Meta crypto executives, first introduced its handheld gaming device plans at the Sui Basecamp event in Paris earlier this year. This announcement puts the company in line with other industry players offering non-web3 handheld gaming PCs, such as Valve's Steam Deck and Asus's ROG Ally X.

According to research from Omdia, global sales of handheld gaming devices reached 19.3 million units in 2023, with projections indicating a rise to 29.3 million units by 2028. The preorders for the SuiPlay0X1 can be made using Sui (SUI), Ether, or Solana, with over 1,000 units ordered within the first 12 hours of the preorder launch.

Dedicated Blockchain Use for Gaming to Surge

Industry expert, Proof of Play CEO Amitt Mahajan, anticipates a surge in the dedicated use of blockchain for gaming applications. Mahajan, renowned for developing the popular Facebook game Farmville, envisions a future where numerous individual blockchains will support specific applications, enhancing scalability and efficiency.

He views blockchain technology as an advanced database that serves as an essential component for scaling applications effectively. The trend of dedicated blockchains for gaming is gaining momentum, with various games on networks like Avalanche utilizing their own dedicated subnets for enhanced performance.

Companies like Meta, Microsoft, Tencent, and Nvidia are heavily investing in the metaverse to enrich their platforms and create new user experiences. Meta, in particular, is exploring the integration of generative AI technology in metaverse gaming, as indicated by recent job listings.

The future of gaming is evolving rapidly, with blockchain technology playing a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of immersive gaming experiences. Players can look forward to a new era of innovation and possibilities in the gaming industry as companies continue to push the boundaries of what is achievable.
