The noise generated by the constant running of fans to cool down the mining computers has been a significant source of frustration in the area. Despite the company's claims that the noise levels were within national limits, residents expressed their displeasure with the disruptive sound.
Mayor Kjell-Børge Freiberg of Hadsel expressed relief at the shutdown, stating that the data center had been a nuisance for both politicians and neighbors for the past three years. The closure of the facility had a direct impact on the region, especially in terms of electricity costs.
The Ripple Effect on Local Electricity Rates
The shutdown of the bitcoin mining plant resulted in a 20% increase in electricity prices for residents, as the facility accounted for a significant portion of the income of the local network company Noranett. This sudden loss of revenue forced the remaining electricity customers to bear the burden of the additional costs.
Noranett, a key player in Norway's electricity distribution network, highlighted the impact of losing such a major customer overnight. Network manager Robin Jakobsen explained that the closure would lead to an increase in the annual electricity bills for households, potentially amounting to thousands of Norwegian Kroners extra.
With the need to offset the lost income, the municipality of Hadsel is now on the lookout for new projects that can utilize the surplus electricity. By finding alternative sources of demand, the hope is to stabilize electricity prices for local consumers.
Despite the challenges posed by the shutdown of the bitcoin mining facility, Mayor Freiberg emphasized the municipality's commitment to navigating the complexities of the power system regulations.
