The Australian Federal Police Seizes $6.4 Million in crypto from Alleged Criminal Mastermind
In a significant Development, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced on Tuesday that they had confiscated $6.4 million in cryptocurrency as part of an investigation targeting the alleged mastermind behind the encrypted communication app, Ghost. The app has been reportedly used by organized crime syndicates for illicit activities, prompting the AFP to take action.
The Arrest and Charges
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Jay Je Yoon Jung from New South Wales, was apprehended on September 17 under the operation codenamed "Operation Kraken." Jung is currently facing multiple charges, including supporting a criminal organization, as the authorities ramp up efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the country.
The cryptocurrency Seizure
According to a statement released by the Australian Federal Police, the seizure of $6.4 million in Digital assets became possible after analysts cracked the seed phrase from cryptocurrency Wallets recovered during a raid on Jung's residence. This breakthrough allowed the authorities to transfer the seized funds into secure storage in compliance with the Commonwealth Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, which aims to disrupt criminal enterprises by confiscating their ill-gotten gains.
This is the second incident of a crypto-related asset freeze under Operation Kraken, following a previous operation that restrained assets linked to a syndicate in Western Australia earlier this year. It is important to note that the operation's name bears no connection to any cryptocurrency Exchange in the Market.
Impact of Operation Kraken
Operation Kraken has already yielded significant results, with 46 arrests, 93 search warrants executed, and the seizure of 30 illegal firearms as part of the ongoing investigation. The concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies have also led to the prevention of over 200 kilograms of illicit drugs from entering the Australian Market and the confiscation of more than $1.6 million in Cash.
The AFP-led Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce, which spearheads Operation Kraken, brings together resources from various agencies, including the Australian Taxation Office, AUSTRAC, and the Australian Border Force. Since its inception in 2012, the task force has successfully restrained criminal assets amounting to more than $759 million.

As the investigations continue, the Australian Federal Police is expected to pursue the permanent forfeiture of the seized cryptocurrency.
